Mamata Poojary... We salute you.

In the world that Mamata Poojary grew up, there are no second chances.

Before the talent spotters discovered her, she lived with her parents in a remote hamlet in Dakshina Kannada district where they had no electricity, where two decent meals a day was a luxury, and where even now no vehicle can drive up to her doorstep because there are no motorable roads.

Her parents are coolies, her brother works in a garage. Mamata had to trudge five to six kilometres to school every day. The fish that she or her brother caught in the roiling stream near their home was the only ‘delicacy’ her family could afford. Fish, fried or pickled, incidentally remains her favourite dish.

One Friday, India beat Thailand 28-14 at Guangzhou to win the gold medal in women’s kabaddi and Mamata was adjudged Best Raider of the Asian Games.

It is the well-deserved reward for the backcountry lass who had nothing but her lithe 5-foot-11-inch frame and a survival ethic that forced her to optimise every sliver of opportunity that came her way.

In Dakshina Kannada where Mamata grew up, ever since the news filtered in, they have been chanting kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi... or is that Mamata Mamata..? She was first spotted during a game at Gadag in 2001. She was studying at the Government PU College in Muniyal, Karkala taluk of Udupi, and when Purushotham Poojary, president of the DK Kabaddi Association and physical director at the Sri Gokarnatheshwara College in Mangalore, saw her he knew right away that here was a champion in the making.

Poojary said, “Mamata was the only player in the Udupi team who was actually playing. I spoke to the coach who said she was a brilliant player but came from a financially backward family and that she was willing to come to Mangalore if you are willing to coach her.”

Much of the current jubilation is at the DK district Kabaddi Association where Mamata first honed her skills. Despite being poor, her parents never dissuaded her from sports. “She was very hardworking and understood her family problems. She never allowed anyone to get to know of her difficulties,” Poojary added.

When she first came to Mangalore, Mamata stayed at a hostel run by the then president of the association for six months before getting admission to the Backward Community Hostel. During her three years at the Sri Gokarnatheshwara College, she represented the University at various national level competitions.

Poojary had insisted that she stay focussed on kabaddi rather than participating in all games as was the norm in other colleges. “She had disagreed several times back then,” he recalls, “but it has paid off.”

The turning point came during an All India Invitation Match in Mumbai where she represented the association. The team reached the semifinals and she was adjudged the best raider, said Poojary.

Dhanam Reddy from the Southern Railways asked Mamata if she would play for their team and offered her a job in Andhra Pradesh. But Mamata was then in the final year of her BA course and unwilling to give up her studies.

“I told her that she could complete her education later but needed to take up the job. She did, but returned last year to clear her exams,” Poojary said. Mamata’s economics lecturer, Chandra K, was also all praise for her discipline and determination.
“Despite her job coming in the way, she returned after a gap of two years and cleared all the papers,” he said. “Before leaving for the Asian Games, she had come to seek our blessings,” says Poojary.

Hi...Manoj,

It is the Slow Macd with a setting of 12,26,9 (Hour T/F).

Being a trend indicator, it may lag a bit but to hold on to a position, it's success rate is good.

As long as it is above the trigger line, the trend continuing remains strong in uptrend. Once it has triggered, it becomes sell on rises. On many occasions, Nifty makes a new uptrend high despite triggering which is another bearish sign. The opposite is true in downtrend.

Divergences in Slow macd is more reliable.

@ Ka,

You did very good with your observations.

It is said of Elliott waves that "Believing what you see is the toughest act".
It is tough because our mind is stuffed with "so much of opinions & views".
Keep emptying them out.
Read the new data with an objective mind and show the conviction without any fear of "being seen as wrong"

If anything is there to master in this world, it is "mastering oneself".

As Swami Vivekananda says, " Everyone of us come here with a full package from the almighty. Some explore it fully like Albert Einstein and most don't. Newton did the "connecting the Apple falling to gravity theory" and Archimedes did the "Water displacing to Density theory".

You are truly exploiting your potential now..Keep the balance.

Best Wishes.

Recovering from a Republic Day high? Here are some sobering thoughts to help you:

* 13 per cent of adult Indians still do not recognise the Tricolour

* 9 per cent don't know the name of the country; another 9 per cent give wrong answers

* 27 per cent go blank when you ask them about 15th of August

* 39 per cent don't have the faintest idea of what is 26th January

* the figure goes up to 55 per cent if you accept only 'Republic Day'
as the correct answer.

These are some of the shocking findings of the CNN IBN–HT State of the Nation Poll conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). The poll was carried out between January 7 and 14 among 15,141 eligible voters spread across 986 villages or urban localities in 230 parliamentary constituencies.

The sample was a true mirror of Indian population: 75 per cent rural respondents, 46 per cent women, 11 per cent Muslims, 18 per cent Dalit and 9 per cent adivasis.

Nevertheless, Happy Republic day.

@Mynac,
The statistical data u highlighted here is not statistical data at all...rather a propaganda as the sample size is too small compared to it's population of 110 crore, you take another 230 constituency, the data will vary...I'm sure.

I admit, there are more problems than comforts in India...and I experience it from close timer and again...because I stay in Assam...where the greatest republic of the world can't provide security to trains and buses...so, the services remain closed for entire three days (one day prior and post to both republic day and Independence day) making us locked and hapless...where extremists call bandhs at their will for thousand hours or more...where bombs are exploded anytime, anywhere...yet I'd like to say please don't believe such statistics which are based on unrepresentative sample size...the onus to make India free from all sorts of problems depends upon us...because we elect our representative to our parliament...even if your reprersented data is true, yet we are responsible for it...Please don't take it personal.Hope you understand me.

sreyO...

Happy Republic Day to all.

Regarding the slow MACD reply to Manoj - I have a query. Wether below "0" line (or) above "0" line matters while triggering? When the triggering is above (or) below "0" line what level of importance to be attached. Your guidance will be of great help.

Regards,

Veer

Dear sreyO...,

Not only you but me also have the same opinion that the data will vary, but the fact is not too promising.Every Indian must be alert.

Few years ago we had one TV Show which was called as “Ariel Mr.Gold” Hosted by Anupam Kher…. It was nothing but just half an Hr.Ques-Answer road-show program.
In one episode even a college student from Pune university could not tell the names of "Pandava" & in another episode when the question was asked to inelegant/intellectual people of this society that how many spokes are there in Indian Flag Chakra there?
No one could answer, but surprisingly a tourist bus cleaner, from South India answer the exact No. which is 24.

It is miserable but These are just few examples, so as you said.... "yet we are responsible for it... is the truth.

Dear mynac,

Thanx for reminding the episode...yes I felt ashamed on that day...and I agree with you that just we are slowly forgetting how to love our motherland and its people...i.e our brothers...the contributions that were made by our freedom fighters...we just don't regognise them and honour them..otherwise lakhs of crores of rupees would not have parked in swiss bank. I'm sure some of our elected representatives can not answer the question that a bus cleaner could.
