A story that can change your life

A story that can change your life

In 1972, Jim Cathcart was working at the Little Rock, Arkansas Housing Authority, making $525 a month, with a new wife and baby at home, no college degree, no past successes, and not much hope for the foreseeable future.

One morning, he was sitting in his office listening to the radio, to a program called "Our Changing World" by Earl Nightingale, who was known as "the Dean of Personal Motivation." That day, Nightingale, in his booming voice, said something that would change Jim's life forever: "If you will spend an extra hour each day in study of your chosen field, you will be a national expert in that field in five years or less."

Jim was stunned, but the more he thought about it the more it made sense. Although he had never given a speech, he had always wanted to help people grow in areas of personal development and motivation. He began his quest to put Nightingale's theory to the test by reading books and listening to tapes whenever he could. He also started exercising, became better organized, and joined a self-improvement study group. He persisted through weeks of temptations to quit, just by doing a little more each day to further his goal. Within six months he had learned more than he had in his few years of college, and he began to believe he could turn his goal of becoming a motivational speaker into reality. All the hard work, the discipline, and study paid off. Jim now has delivered more than 2,500 speeches worldwide and has won every major award in the speaking industry.

Just like companies have market value, so do people. In the simplest terms, your market value increases by knowing and doing more. Knowledge is power, not only for your career, but also to improve your family and spiritual life. I once heard a quote that sums it up well, "Knowledge is like climbing a mountain; the higher you reach the more you can see and appreciate."

I love stories because for me, they can bring an idea to life.

There can be nothing farther from the truth than this. I have seen that the only difference between successful people and not-so-successful is perserverance and discipline. It is not being smart. Good article again, ilango sir.

@ Rajagogopal,

You got mail. Hope things are getting better for your family.

Best wishes.

@ Mynac,

"In the larger scheme of things", we will never know why certain things happen. However painful, unbearable it may be, acceptance is the foremost part in getting back to the flow of life.
Listening to other's life experiences make ours bearable, at times. By being a strength to the other grieving members, we forget our grief.
Ours is not to question , "Why.?" but to do what needs to be done now.

We care..We send our healing energy..we send our loving thoughts..and a silent prayer.

Experts here,

I happenned to visit a site called http://www.finviz.com. Here there is a "Screener" tab and choose "All" tab under that. This allows you to enter any fundamental or technical analysis filter criteria to select good stocks. But this doesnt cover NSE/BSE stocks. Any site similarly for Indian markets ?

Thanks

am with you sharing your grief and sorrow and may the lord give you strength to withstand this tragic moments...

Sir has rightly put : "However painful, unbearable it may be, acceptance is the foremost part in getting back to the flow of life....."

Acceptance....acceptance and acceptance of present is the only way.....

Dear golfdude
You can try the stock screener at www.buzzingstocks.com.
This is quite flexible, try http://www.buzzingstocks.com/in/builder.pl for help on search conditions.
Regards.

Nice article as usual.

Sir / Any other Blogmate,

Has anybody tried ever using PnF (Point & Figure) charts. Mostly for stocks. This helps channeling well and does away with many unnecessary noise.

Any help (practical) will be appreciated.

Regards

@rm,

Good site. The search is all TA filters. Does not seem to have fundamentals ( PE, EPS etc ). There is some learning curve there to write the filter :)

Thanks

hi shr
Thanks for the links
Bse one is not working ....do I need to register for that link?

shr said...

Hi Anuj,
I had checked the BSE link before sending and it was fine. Now I am also getting error when i try to open it. Try again after some time?

golfdude said...

shr, anuj -

thanks for the links. ICICI is good. I see a either/or between TA and fundamentals. Which should be ok. I was surprised not to see EPS. Is this not tracked for Indian stocks ?

Thanks

Hi golf dude
ICICI has all old data... make sure you double check that
I would recommend using money control data ...and then screening yourself using excel
thats a difficult task...problem with fundamental data is first it is update differently
and most importantly, its is made by CAs....people very good in cooking(...books)
Case in point satyam computers...So I do this fundamental scanning to
satisfy the warren buffett in me...and then come back to justnifty/technical analysis to
see the price action!!

Good evening Ilango sir,

Very inspiring. Also it gives a message that hard work
never fails.
"If you will spend an extra hour each day in study of your chosen field, you will be a national expert in that field in five years or less."

Words to be marked sir. I plan to stick these words in my children's
room. Now-a-days my daughter is also a regular reader of your weekend stories.

Hi Anuj, Golfdude,

Check the BSE stock screener now. It shows up.
It is very simple one; Screen based on PE or EPS or Market capitalization.
Happy hunting.
